BARNSLEY CHRONICLE STRONGER TOGETHER GRANT SCHEME LAUNCHED

COMMUNITY groups in the borough are being offered the chance to apply again for grants of up to £1,000 as the result of a partnership between the Chronicle and the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner.

Dr Alan Billings has handed another pot of £15,000 to the Stronger Together campaign which will be administered by the Chronicle, with groups filling in a simple form via the Chronicle’s website to apply.

It follows the success of last year’s scheme, which saw a number of local organisations benefit from grants, ranging from a project which helps homeless people by equipping rucksacks for their use to a Christmas party for needy families.

All those applying need to fit the PCC’s criteria of reducing social isolation, tackling crime and keeping young people off the streets and providing support to vulnerable members of the community.

Dr Billings said: “The Stronger Together Grant Scheme worked exceptionally well last year.

“I have visited many of the successful projects and see how they can contribute towards reducing crime and anti-social behaviour.

“I am grateful to the diverse group of people who are willing to serve as panel members. I encourage anyone in the Barnsley district to apply who believes they have a project worth supporting.”

Bobby Hassell, Barnsley Football Club Academy manager said: “I am really pleased to be invited to join the Stronger Together Grant Scheme.

“I am especially keen to see applications from groups offering diversionary activities for young people. Being involved with the Barnsley Football Club Academy and playing football myself, I am aware of the benefits sport can bring to a young person’s well-being.

“Groups that offer diversionary activities for young people are not just providing a couple of hours of sport, they are also offering a healthy way to make new friends, learn new skills and get involved with something that they enjoy. All of this contributes to helping them make the right choices in life.”
