Dr Billings was pleased to be able to present certificates to a group of young people who have taken part in a scheme which saw them volunteering in communities, undertaking mentoring sessions and researching topics with support from South Yorkshire Police and other parts of the criminal justice system.

The Inspiring Youth Awards took place at the force’s Niagara Sports Club last week. the project has been running since 2004 and is a partnership with schools from across South Yorkshire.

The pupils learn about all aspects of policing and have visited the law courts with the High Sheriff is taking some round the law courts where they met with prosecuting and defending barristers and judges

The scheme aims to inspire them and showcase career possibilities within the police and criminal justice system.

The event was attended by the young people and their parents alongside Dr Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Lauren Poultney, South Yorkshire Police Chief, Chief Supt Shelley Hemesley, Martin McKervey High Sheriff and Andrew Coombe, Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire.
