RESPONSE ON HMICFRS PEEL LEGITIMACY REPORT DECEMBER 2017

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services’ (HMICFRS) report on Police Legitimacy was publishedon on Tuesday, 12 December 2017.

The report’s overall judgement scores South Yorkshire Police as Good.  The inspection focused on three main questions: to what extent do forces treat all the people they serve with fairness and respect; how well do forces ensure that their workforces behave ethically and lawfully; to what extent do forces treat their workforces with fairness and respect.

Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner said:  “This report shows that South Yorkshire Police is moving in the right direction. Last year’s report scored the force as needing improvement and these improvements are clearly beginning. I welcome this evidence that officers are treating people fairly and with respect and that the new leadership team promotes fair, ethical behaviour throughout the force.

“Treating people fairly is one of the three priorities I set for the force in the Police and Crime Plan.

“The force has been helped to think through what needs to be done by independent advisory groups on minority community issues in each district of South Yorkshire and also by my independent ethics panel. The panel have done work, for example, around stop and search and the culture of the workforce.

“The force does need, however, to work harder at enhancing the workforce’s sense of well-being and feeling valued.

“I look forward to further progress over the next 12 months.”
