South Yorkshire PCC Adds Support to Project Edward Week with Community Speed Watch

South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Dr Alan Billings has added his support to Project Edward Week – part of the National Police Chiefs’ Council campaign against speeding (Every Day Without A Road Death).

Community Speed Watch, WaverleyDr Billings attended a Community Speed Watch event earlier this week, in Waverley, Rotherham, to see how local residents are taking action against speeding motorists in the area.

Head of the Safety Cameras & Ticket Processing Scott Dernie explains: “Community Speed Watch is not a new initiative, however, at the moment operations are carried out with a representative from the police force in attendance.

“This pilot scheme will enable community groups to conduct speed watch on their own and change driver’s behaviour. Over the next couple of months, six pilot groups will carry out speed operations in their local areas.

Dr Billings added: “I was pleased to attend a Community Speed Watch occasion at Waverley, Rotherham.

“I met members of a local residents group who have formed themselves into a community speed watch team to monitor traffic on certain roads in Waverley.

“I was able to spend a little time with them as they recorded the speed of passing motorists. Those who were over the limit will receive a warning letter and the police will be able to build a picture of repeat offenders and where the hotspots for speeding are.

“The Community Speed Watch initiative is a great example of how police and community can work together to make a real difference.”
