Dr Alan Billings, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, has welcomed the Government’s announcement of a consultation on improving victims’ experiences of the justice system.
The consultation aims to understand how victims can be better supported through the criminal justice process, and has been described by the Ministry of Justice as a major step towards a new Victims’ Law.
Commenting on the consultation, Dr Billings said:
‘As South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, one of my priorities is making sure that we put victims first throughout the criminal justice process, from reporting a crime and supporting a police investigation, through to the conclusion of a case and beyond.
‘I am directly responsible for commissioning services to support victims of crime in our communities, including Victim Support, The Sexual Assault Referral Centre, Independent Sexual Violence Advisor and Restorative Justice services. I support partners with the local Independent Domestic Violence Advisor services.
‘These services provide practical and emotional support for victims of crime, often throughout the criminal justice process, and help them to process what they have been through and move on from their experiences.
‘While I am pleased about the progress we have made in supporting those affected by crime in South Yorkshire, a Victims’ Law which puts the rights of victims on a statutory footing is long overdue, and I welcome the Government consultation on this issue.
‘I would encourage criminal justice professionals, victims’ organisations and crucially victims themselves to take part in this consultation, so that their views, experiences and needs are taken into account during this important process.’
