South Yorkshire Police & Crime Commissioner, Dr Alan Billings has added support to a local performing arts project aimed at highlighting how to spot the signs of domestic abuse.

The production, Home Safe? is currently touring in South Yorkshire, with performances for school pupils and college students.

Breakout Arts worked with individuals in Rotherham, Sheffield Women’s Aid, Dalton Early Help youth group, and various refuges in the county to develop the powerful and hard-hitting performance.

This week, the PCC joined Year 10 pupils from Wales High School to watch the performance, which centres on three main characters and their experiences in abusive and controlling relationships.

A donation from the PCC’s community grants scheme, Giving Back, funded the project, which supports the Commissioner’s priorities for South Yorkshire Police.

Dr Billings said: “Tackling domestic abuse is one of the key areas of focus in my Police and Crime Plan and I’m pleased to see productions like Home Safe? being performed to such a wide audience in South Yorkshire.

“Educating young people on the impacts of coercive and controlling behaviour and knowing how to spot the signs is the first vital step in tackling domestic abuse and I encourage people to support the show.”
